Why is Biometric Update Important?

The Aadhaar card is our biggest identity proof today. It is not just a piece of paper, but the foundation of our digital identity. Aadhaar holds two types of information: one is our demographic data (Name, Address) and the other is Biometric data (Fingerprints, Iris/Eye Scan, and Photograph).

Why is Biometric Update Necessary?

It is very important to update the biometric data in Aadhaar from time to time, especially for two main reasons:

1. For Children (Mandatory Biometric Update – MBU)

This is most crucial for children. When a child is young, their fingerprints and iris are not fully developed. UIDAI has made this mandatory:

  • At 5 years of age: The first biometric update is essential.
  • At 15 years of age: The second and final biometric update is essential.

If this update is not done at ages 5 and 15, the child’s Aadhaar card may become Inactive, making it difficult for them to get school admission, scholarships, or benefits from government schemes.

2. For Adults (For Accuracy and Security)

With age or due to injury, the quality of our fingerprints and iris can change. Having old and unclear biometric data can cause these problems:

  • Failure in Authentication: The machine will not be able to recognize your fingerprint when applying for government schemes, going to the bank, getting rations, or buying a SIM card, and your work will stop.
  • Better Security: Updated and clear biometric data makes your identity more secure, which reduces the risk of Identity Theft and fraud. (The Hindi sentence about “every 5 years” suggests a general instruction to update for everyone, which enhances security.)

What Should You Do?

If your biometric data is 5 years old, or if your child has completed the age of 5 or 15, you should immediately visit your nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra and get your biometrics (Fingerprint, Iris, and Photo) updated.Remember, updated Aadhaar biometrics mean: Easy services, stronger security, and seamless access to government benefits!
